Published on October 26, 2016. Updated October 27, 2016Shannon and David Beador joined The Real Housewives of Orange County back in season 9. Despite the fact that they’ve only been with the show for three years, viewers have already seen their marriage go through so many ups and downs. We’ve seen them suffer through a cheating scandal, threats of divorce and even allegations of abuse, but today their relationship has done a complete 360 and in a surprising twist of events their relationship is better than ever! Shannon and David have been extremely open about the strains in their marriage which is quite refreshing. They somehow managed to escape the reality TV curse that gobbles up many marriages featured on the Real Housewives and have come out on the other side stronger than before. The reality couple just celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary, so here’s a look at 6 things you might not have known about Shannon and David Beador’s relationship!
6. How They Met and Their Engagement
Shannon revealed on an Instagram post that she met her husband at a restaurant in Newport Beach. The restaurant is called Quiet Woman and is also where David and Shannon announced their engagement after getting engaged at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. She first posted a picture with the caption: “Home from NYC! Having a crazy fun time with friends at the Rick Springfield concert at the Newport Beach Hyatt.” Later in the night she posted another photo in a group of friends with the caption: “At my favorite spot Quiet Woman where I met my husband and where we announced our engagement!” Now Shannon and David have three daughters together, Sophie, 14, and 11-year-old twins Stella and Adeline.
5. Their Wedding
Shannon and David just recently celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary which is quite impressive for not only a couple living in Orange County, but who are also on reality television. David and Shannon met when she moved to Orange County after graduating from the University of South Carolina (USC) and since then their marriage has definitely been tested in some of the worst ways possible. They’ve come close to divorce, but thankfully decided to make it work. In the most recent season of RHOC, David and Shannon renewed their wedding vows at the same location they got married and where she grew up! It was totally romantic. It was Shannon’s 52nd birthday and David threw her a surprise party complete with a vow renewal! The whole thing took place at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe which is where the couple got married 16 years prior and where David proposed to her on her birthday.
4. Drama with the In-Laws
Viewers of RHOOC met David Beador’s mother Donna for the first time during season 11. The experience was not positive because she showed up to an event where her granddaughters were performing. Donna spent the night talking badly about Shannon and her marriage to David which revealed the tumultuous relationship between the Real Housewives star and her in-laws. Shannon later revealed that she felt like her mother-in-law never liked her because, prior to her marriage to David, he spent a lot of time with his mother and their family, and Shannon speculates that Donna feels like she took him away from them. “We’ve had ups and downs. I’ve had good, very good, periods with David’s mother, and then they’re down here,” said Shannon. Shannon has been adamant that despite her differences with David’s family, she has never kept her kids or husband away from them and actually encourages David to reach out to the more because she never wants to be blamed for straining their relationship. “My relationship has been volatile with my in-laws from the beginning. I have to respect my husband. He’s put between a rock and a hard place. It’s his family. So we don’t really talk about it. We’re both avoiders. But who wants to talk about it? It’s not a good topic,” she said.
Bravo3. The Affair
David’s affair was revealed during season 10 of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Both Shannon and David were both open about the experience once they had decided they would stay together and work through it. Viewers were surprised to learn as many details as they did about the affair including the fact that it all started soon after she met Vicki, Tamra and Heather. It lasted for eight months and at one point David even threatened to leave Shannon and their daughters, told his kids about it and thought he was in love with the other woman, who has been revealed as Nicole McMackin. During an interview on WWHL with Andy Cohen, both Shannon and David divulged a lot of personal secrets about the affair so that it was all out there on their terms. Shannon revealed that McMackin befriended her while the affair was going on and even talked to her about her marriage. “I have actually spoken to her because she called me once….In the conversation I wanted to say certain things, but I didn’t. I said, ‘I want my family back.’ Her response was, ‘He’s obsessed with me. He wants to marry me and I don’t even know the guy.’ It wasn’t a kind conversation and I kept my composure,” said Shannon. Now two years later they seem to have moved past it all and are happier than ever!
Bravo2. Divorce is Not an Option
Shannon and David both come from broken families so both of them went into marriage believing that they didn’t ever want to get divorced. “Divorce is not an option, it has never been an option for me. I love my family and I will do whatever it takes to keep my family together,” Shannon said at the beginning of season 10. Shannon wrote about her decision to stay married to David, even after his affair in her Bravo blog: “The decision was not an easy one. But after much counseling and discussions with our children, we thought that we would tell our story with the hope that other couples who have faced similar heartbreak can repair and restore their marriage like David and I are doing.”
Bravo1. Alleged Assault
In one of the most recent episodes of RHOC, fellow Housewives Kelly Dodd and Vicki Gunvalson openly stated that David “beat the sh-t out of [Shannon].” This wild accusation has been vehemently denied by both Shannon and David, but he was arrested and charged with assault back in 2003. Back in 2014 Shannon told Star Magazine that the fight never got physical; it was merely a verbal argument and she called the police because she knew that would put an end to it. But she was adamant nothing serious ever happened. There are claims that David did plead guilty to the charges and was forced to complete three years of informal probation, an alleged 10 day work program and a voluntary batterers treatment program. There’s also a separate report that claims he was investigated by police for two counts of assault and battery, but the case was dismissed.
