General Hospital Storylines That Annoyed Fans

Published on September 12, 2019.

The town of Port Charles has provided some pretty interesting storylines over the past five decades, from characters coming back from the dead, incredible tales of romance (Luke and Laura, anyone?), and the daily drama of doctors and nurses at General Hospital (GH) as they work hard to save lives. At times, the GH stories told have been ground-breaking in nature, entertaining, and thought-provoking; however, there have been times the daytime drama has not been able to nail storylines. As such, here are the top GH storylines that have annoyed fans.

12. The Chimera

From scarecrows to creepy child drawings, terrible adult nightmares, and the very idea that a child could unlock a deadly virus that could wipe out all of Port Charles, the chimera storyline was not only over-the-top but quite annoying as well. Mix in Helena hallucinations, and GH fans were very happy when this all came to a close.

11. Toxic Balls Released

Sounds like a title to a comedy flick, but back in 2009 this became a cheesy reality for the hospital. Apparently, the government lost two biotoxin balls that somehow made it into the hospital’s ventilation system, and they were deadly. All the while, a gala was going in the middle of the hospital. Jason, Spinelli, Sam, and Patrick were on the rescue mission, which was far more annoying than intriguing.

10. JaSam’s Reunion Drags On

Most GH viewers were happy to see Jason Morgan and Sam McCall reunite after the real Jason came back to Port Charles in 2017. Having said that, the JaSam reunion took forever. There’s having a storyline escalate to keep fans on the edge of their seats, and then there’s painfully dragging it on until viewers don’t really care anymore.

9. Elizabeth, The Bad Girl

It always sucks when soap opera writers decide to throw a plot twist into a storyline and suddenly turn a pretty decent character into a deceitful one. Such was the case a few years back when Elizabeth, Port Charles’ girl next door, decided to hide the fact that she knew Jake Doe was really Jason. While Jake Doe ended up being Drew Cain, the secrets, lies, and scheming from Liz was not a good look for her.

8. Nelle’s Reign Of Terror

Just how many times can one girl scheme against one family in a matter of two small years? Not only was Nelle’s lying and plots against Carly annoying, the fact that Michael ate up every last word of hers was equally crazy. To boot, the baby switch storyline with Wiley, Brad, and Lucas has dragged at an annoyingly slow rate. How much havoc can one woman wreak on a single family without fans losing interest?

7. Ask Man Landers

Who else misses Nathan West? Most GH fans do; however, his “ask Man Landers” storyline was annoying. What wasn’t annoying was the fact that the soap shed light on Chet, and his story around the military and PTSD, but, the very idea that Nathan stepped in for Amy and paraded around as an advice columnist, Maxie’s reaction, and then the groupies that stalked him was ridiculous!

6. Emily’s Twin

Twins pop up all the time in the land of daytime drama, but most times, they add a little excitement to a storyline. While Emily Quartermaine was dead and gone in 2007, her twin Rebecca Shaw came to Port Charles some two years later, and the storyline was just plain silly … even by soap opera standards. Emily was adopted, and Rebecca wanting a piece of the Quartermaine pie made no sense. Shaw showed up in January 2009, and was gone by that December.

5. Robin’s Alive…Only To Leave Port Charles…

Avid GH fans watched little Robin Scorpio, the offspring of super spies Anna Devane and Robert Scorpio, literally grow up on the small screen, debuting on the daytime soap in September 1985. As an adult, she struggled with her HIV diagnosis, became a doctor to make a difference, fell in love, got married, and started a family of her own. Fans loved watching her happy ending until she was killed off in late 2011, but they were aware that she was just being held captive by Jerry Jacks. After two years of waiting and hoping that Robin’s loved ones would find her, when she did finally get back and settled into life, the story would take another turn, with her exiting the show once again. While it does make sense that she would want to help former love and long-time friend Jason Morgan, no one could believe it would be at the expense of not seeing her daughter Emma grow up.

4. One Life To Live (OLTL) Characters Start New Life In GH…Only To Disappear

It made sense why GH brought actors Kassie DePaiva, Roger Howarth, Michael Easton, and Kristen Alderson into Port Charles to revive their OLTL characters in 2012. With the show ending it’s more than 40-year run, a new flock of daytime fans could potentially jump on the GH ship for their daily dose of drama and romance. Having said that, in January 2013, GH was informed by Prospects Park (the owners of the OLTL characters and storylines) that these characters would have to leave the show, as they were planning to re-launch the soap online. GH scrambled with recasting these actors into new roles within the little town. Roger Howarth’s Todd character turned into Franco; Michael Easton’s character of John McBain turned into Dr. Silas Clay; Kristen DeAnn Alderson’s Star Manning turned into Kiki Jerome; and Kassie DePaiva moved to Days of Our Lives. This fast switcheroo left some GH audiences confused and annoyed.

3. Jake’s Alive!

Coming back from the dead is not a new daytime soap storyline. Much like the evil twin or look-alike characters that come out of nowhere, no soap opera character is ever really dead and gone, especially in the land of Port Charles. However, as Jake’s death was finalized quite well in 2011 when he passed on as a result of a hit-and-run thanks to adopted granddad Luke Spence, plus donating his kidneys to Josslyn Jack, bringing him back to life was a tad annoying. Especially since in some soap cases, kids seem to have a magical growth spurt after four years of absence; however, little Jake didn’t seem to have aged all that much considering he’d been gone for a considerable amount of time. The storyline tied in well with Jake’s dad, Jason Morgan (really, Drew Cain), coming back from the dead, but it still came off as rather odd.

2. Jason’s Alive…When Will The Rest Of Port Charles Find Out?

The initial introduction of actor Billy Miller as Jason Morgan made for a great storyline at the time. Unlike Jake Spencer’s demise, fans questioned whether or not Jason was really dead after he was shot in 2012, and there had been a lot of teasers along the way to indicate Jason was alive. However, the fact that the storyline technically began in early 2014 when Victor Cassadine approached Robin to help him bring Helena and Stavros back to life (in turn saving Jason), it seemed like forever until the rest of Port Charles found out. The storyline dragged on, which fans found annoying.

1. Denise Is Ava

While most of Port Charles thought Ava Jerome was a goner in earlier 2015, it was revealed that she wasn’t. Due to pending criminal charges, she came back into the GH fold as a long-lost sister of Ava … Denise. She seemed to have everyone fooled, including former lover Morgan Corinthos, who really should’ve figured out truth way sooner than he eventually did.
