Kesha Lawsuit: 11 Celebrities Showing Their SupportPublished on February 22, 2016.
On Friday February 19, pop singer Kesha was left in tears after a judge ruled that she would not be released from her contract with Kemosabe Records which also links her to music producer Dr. Luke. Since last fall, the singer has come forward with her claims of the abuse she has suffered from Dr. Luke since she was 18 years old when she first signed with him. After the ruling, everyone was shocked, from fans to fellow celebrities and as a result many have taken to social media to stand in solidarity with Kesha and show their support, using the hashtag “FreeKesha.” Many have been vocal about their support, so here are 11 celebrities who stand behind Kesha and the larger issue surrounding her case.
11. Bea Miller
Former X Factor contestant Bea Miller was very vocal about the ruling. Writing four separate tweets starting with, “#FREEKESHA.” “If you don’t know what’s been happening to kesha go scroll through the hashtag.” She continued, “it disgusts me and breaks my heart that any court or person would continuously question a woman who claims she has been assaulted. The fact that kesha has to choose to either freely make music or avoid the person who abused her is outrageous and degrading #freekesha.”
10. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande was one of the first to take to social media after the news of the ruling, stating simply on her Twitter, “My heart is with @KeshaRose.”
Lorde also took to Twitter to stand by the fellow singer. She wrote, “standing with @KeshaRose through this traumatic, deeply unfair time. send good vibes her way everyone.”
8. Brad Walsh
Singer Brad Walsh was one of the first to speak out as well after the ruling, and one of a few men to also comment on the issue. He wrote, “Forcing a woman to work with her rapist, or to work to profit her rapist, is a failure of justice. #freekesha.” He also included an excerpt from Kesha’s court documents which detail one specific instance in which she was drugged and sexually assaulted by Dr. Luke.
7. Alessia Cara
Alessia Cara wrote on her Twitter, “really disappointing to hear about this Kesha case. no one should be denied freedom from their abuser, nor freedom of their creativity.”
6. Iggy Azalea
Iggy Azalea was very vocal in her support, giving her opinion on the case in two separate tweets. “If two people dont want to be in business with one another it seems very cruel for one to hold the other in a contract.” And, “Im not accusing anyone of anything, but i believe Kesha deserves the ability to move forward, create and earn a living.”
Solo artist, Halsey, was very open about her feelings on the case, writing, “Disgusted by anyone in power positions abusing their authority. My heart breaks for Kesha and all people affected by this toxicity. F–k.” She added, “I don’t even know what I would do… I only hope she can find peace and find a way to continue to express herself without fear.”
JoJo was a teen pop sensation before encountering her own label trouble and lawsuit in which she was released from her contract and spoke out about her own experience to support Kesha. “When you’re part of the creative community, all you want to do is make your art and tell your truth.” She went on, “I don’t know all the facts, of course, but the bottom line is: it is a terrible feeling to not own your voice/ be able to release music. I felt very alone when I was going through my lawsuit. it was my fans who kept me going. The #freejojo campaign meant everything to me.” JoJo then shared a picture of Kesha crying in the courtroom and wrote, “these pictures truly broke my heart today.”
3. Kelly Clarkson/ Best Coast
Kelly Clarkson took to her Twitter to show her support by sharing fellow artist Best Coast’s tweet about the matter. Kesha’s mom, Pebe Sebert, took to her Twitter to confirm the news, writing, “A persons wealth is not measured by what they have but by WHO they help with it. And Taylor Swift is a truly RICH PERSON. Thank you.” She added, “Taylor Swift has just generously donated $250,000 to Kesha, as a show of support during this difficult time. AMAZING!!”
