Fame10 Fashion Evolution: Gwyneth Paltrow

Published on August 18, 2014. Updated April 3, 2017

Gwyneth Paltrow is undeniably beautiful; however, when it comes to her sense of style, the jury is still out. Sometimes she shows up on the red carpet looking ridiculously chic but, there are other times, where she just gets it so wrong. With her, it can be something as simple as the accessories – she doesn’t always coordinate! We are convinced that she doesn’t have a stylist or that, if she does, her stylist has a love/hate relationship with her and gets back at the Oscar-winning actress by styling her in the most ridiculous ways. Come check out Paltrow’s fashion evolution – there is plenty to ridicule!

Premiere of Great Expectations – 1998

Gwyneth Paltrow looked stylish and chic at the premiere of “Great Expectations in this simple black dress with spaghetti straps, a matching shawl and black kitten heels. The most interesting thing about this photo is her cute chin-length bob. Paltrow was growing her hair out. She had it chopped off for her role in “Sliding Doors.” We really wish she would cut it off again – she has perfect bone structure for short hair.

Premiere of The Talented Mr. Ripley – 1999

The rising star looked pretty at the premiere of “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” The dress is kind of dated, as are the strappy heels, but Gwyneth Paltrow hasn’t exactly proved herself to be the most stylish of stars. We really like the dark hair she is sporting – a nice change from the blonde. Around this time, Paltrow – who had broken up with Brad Pitt a couple of years earlier – was dating Ben Affleck. These two were a pretty odd match. Thankfully it didn’t last!

Premiere of The Anniversary Party – 2001

Gwyneth Paltrow wore a pretty, form-fitting, knee-length, pink dress to the premiere of The Anniversary Party. The only problem that we have with this outfit is the shoes. They don’t match at all and they look clunky with the fit of the dress. Paltrow has had considerable experience on the red carpet at this point, but she still isn’t really that stylish. Pairing some nice dainty-looking heels to wear with this dress shouldn’t have been that difficult.

Premiere of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow – 2004

Gwyneth wore a white dress with a beige sash at the waste and black heels to the premiere of “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.” The dress itself is totally unflattering. It makes her look like she is lumpy and bumpy and the shoes are another problem altogether. Given that the dress is white and the sash is beige – why would she choose a black pair of heels? Paltrow is clearly challenged when it comes to fashion and she obviously needs a stylist.

77th Annual Academy Awards – 2005

The Oscar-winning actress looked stunning in this strapless, pale pink Stella McCartney gown at the 77th Annual Academy Awards. When it comes to fashion, Gwyneth Paltrow usually hits or misses – well, she mostly misses – but this one is definitely a winner. The only problem we have with the outfit, however, is her choice of clutch. Instead of bringing a light colored clutch, she brought a black one! What was she thinking?

The Fashion Group International’s 23rd Annual Night of Stars – 2006

Gwyneth Paltrow proved once again that she has no fashion sense when she showed up in this black vintage YSL dress at The Fashion Group International’s 23rd Annual Night of Stars. The dress doesn’t do anything for her figure except make her look like she is hiding ten extra pounds. Someone needs to get her a stylist! On the plus side, at least she matched her accessories appropriately with the outfit – that is a definite improvement.

79th Annual Academy Awards – 2007

The “Shakespeare in Love” star wore this lovely peach-colored Zac Posen dress to the 79th Annual Academy Awards. The dress is nice, especially compared to her many awkward-looking red carpet ensembles, but she doesn’t look as beautiful as we have seen her at other times. At this point, Gwyneth Paltrow was gearing up for a career comeback. She landed a part in “Iron Man” alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Pepper Potts.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation Annual Spring Gala Benefit – 2008

At the Breast Cancer Research Foundation Annual Spring Gala Benefit, Gwyneth Paltrow wore this strapless, pink vintage Christian Dior dress by Marc Bohan with a black sash around the waist, a black clutch and black heels. The outfit looks well put together, especially when you compare it to other things she has worn on the red carpet. We also like the new hairstyle Paltrow is sporting. The bob really suits her more than the long mane!

Unforgettable Evening Benefiting Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund – 2009

The “Iron Man” star wore this Calvin Klein dress with a Balmain Jacket and Roger Vivier pink-and-yellow feather pumps to the Unforgettable Evening Benefiting Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. The shoes are the most interesting part of this ensemble; however, we can’t help but feel that they don’t blend well enough. We aren’t crazy about this outfit, but it is a definite improvement in many ways.

Hollywood Walk of Fame – 2010

Gwyneth Paltrow looked absolutely stunning in this white, lace Monique Lhullier dress with peach-colored Pierre Hardy sandals that she wore to receive her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There aren’t too many instances where the Oscar-winning actress looks this stylish and chic. We are, however,  a bit shocked that she was given this honor given that her career has been on the decline since she won the Academy Award for her performance in “Shakespeare in Love.”

Premiere of Contagion – 2011

The “Emma” star looked breathtakingly beautiful at the premiere of “Contagion.” She wore this pale pink, backless Prada gown with Bulgari earrings. The dress is extraordinarily flattering on Gwyneth Paltrow, but we can’t help but feel that it was too much for this event, especially given that her role in the film was so small. She really should have saved it for the Academy Awards or the Golden Globe Awards. That would have been more appropriate.

Vanity Fair Oscar Party – 2012

The “Sliding Doors” star rocked the same white Tom Ford dress she wore to the Academy Awards at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. She wore a white cape with the dress when she walked the red carpet for the Oscars, but ditched it for the after party. The dress is beautiful and really flatters Gwyneth Paltrow’s lithe figure. We are not super crazy about the cape though. It seems to take away from the dress and a dress like this deserves everyone’s complete attention.

Tracy Anderson Flagship Studio Opening – 2013

Gwyneth Paltrow attended the opening of Tracy Anderson’s Flagship Studio Opening looking stylish and toned. She wore this purple Victoria Beckham dress, which really showed off her killer figure, with black Michael Kors shoes that had neon-orange ankle straps. The dress was a bit short but, hey, if you had legs like that, wouldn’t you want to show them off? Let’s hope Paltrow is able to keep turning out the stylish outfits!
