Iconic and memorable celebrity wedding gowns often predict the bridal trends for the months to follow. Celebrities are known for their ability to start trends and this remains true for the dresses they wear both off and on-screen. With big-budget films also comes quite a bit of freedom when it comes to costume design and extravagant creations, so follow along for some of the most iconic on-screen wedding dresses of all time:
15. Fifty Shades Freed
Whatever your opinion may be about the Fifty Shades of Grey series, the one thing that is undeniable is how stunning the wedding dress worn by Dakota Johnson is in the final installment! The elegant lace number features a dainty, button-up back, a figure-hugging shape and a gorgeous bateau neckline.
14. The Vow
Unlike the traditional white wedding bride on-screen, Rachel McAdams opted for something a little less conventional when she played the role of a bride in The Vow. Her look consisted of a peachy-pink minidress which featured a flouncy embellished skirt and ruched bust.
13. The Graduate
Who could possibly forget the iconic wedding scene from the ending of The Graduate? The dress worn by Elaine Robinson is classic with its lace detailing and long sleeve cut. Even when bursting out the front doors of the church, the gown looks impeccable and timeless.
12. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
When it comes to dramatic on-screen wedding dresses, the look worn by Jennifer Lawrence when playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games is definitely one of the most memorable. The look was designed by Tex Saverio and featured a metal bodice covered in Swarovski crystals in which the metal was intended to represent fire and flames.
11. Bride Wars
Unsurprisingly, there were definitely a few memorable wedding dress moments in the film Bride Wars featuring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. This voluminous Vera Wang dress worn by Hudson was a standout, especially with its sweetheart neckline and charcoal grey sash.
10. Funny Face
Many fans remember the dress that Audrey Hepburn wore while starring in Funny Face more than they remember her real-life wedding dress! The look is undeniably one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time when it comes to film with its bateau neckline, full skirt, and ultra-tailored waist.
9. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Long before Meghan Markle took on the role of Princess Bride, Anne Hathaway did so on the big screen in The Princess Diaries 2. In the role as Princess Mia, she wore an ethereal lace gown with long sleeves and a dainty, scalloped off-the-shoulder neckline. She pulled her hair up into an updo to show off the elegant neckline and her collarbones.
Since the 1931 version of Frankenstein was a silent film, the clothing and makeup truly needed to be able to do all the talking. The dress worn by Mae Clarke was a serious show-stopper with its cascading veil, extravagant headpiece, and long lace sleeves.
7. The Wedding Planner
The dress worn by Jennifer Lopez in The Wedding Planner is definitely one of the most memorable of all time. The stunning bride wore a sleek, off-the-shoulder long sleeve dress that’s quite conservative but still delicate and elegant.
6. The Princess Bride
Every little girl dreamed of getting married in a powder blue lace gown after watching The Princess Bride! This Renaissance-inspired bridal look is definitely quite memorable with its unconventional color and ornate detailing.
5. Mamma Mia!
No one could forget the intimate wedding affair that took place on the top of a Grecian island caldera in Mamma Mia! Amanda Seyfried took on the role of the blushing bride wearing an empire-waist gown covered in frills, ruffles, and light turquoise embroidery.
4. The Sound of Music
The beautiful Julie Andrews was a vision in white when she played the role of the bride in The Sound of Music. The sleek gown was the epitome of class and sophistication with its high collar, long sleeves and perfectly tailored shape.
3. Sex and the City
One of the central plotlines of the Sex and the City film surrounds the ultra-glamorous New York wedding affair sponsored by Vogue for Carrie and Mr. Big. Although the wedding (spoiler alert!) doesn’t pan out to be the fairytale day Carrie envisioned, there’s simply no denying how gorgeous her dress was. The Vivienne Westwood number featured a dramatic strapless neckline and full tiered skirt which she topped with an oversized turquoise feather in her hair.
2. Mirror Mirror
Julia Roberts took to the big screen in the 2012 adaption of Snow White entitled Mirror Mirror. The entire film featured quite a few extravagant fashion moments, but the wedding dress look was by far the crowd favorite. The spectacular gown featured over 100,000 Swarovski crystals and 20 different tones embellishing the skirt, proving it to be a serious work of art.
1. Crazy Rich Asians
A more recent iconic wedding dress is the swoon-worthy gown worn by the bride in Crazy Rich Asians. The dress was designed by costume designer Mary Vogt and was inspired by ballet and Swan Lake. The opulent gown featured a tiered skirt which was layered over a jumpsuit with thousands of golden crystals.
