A ‘Friends’ Reunion Special Is Reportedly “In The Works” At HBO Max

Published on November 13, 2019.

Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter reported that an unscripted Friends reunion special is in talks at HBO Max!

Both sources also said that the sitcom’s special is in the planning phases at the streaming service after HBO Max bought the rights to stream the sitcom exclusively on their platform for $425 million. This means the new streaming service will become the home to all the sitcom’s episodes when HBO Max launches in 2020.

“Talks are currently underway for an unscripted reunion special that would feature Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, as well as series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Sources caution that a deal is far from done and agreements with cast and creatives still need to be hammered out. When and if deals are completed, the challenge then becomes sorting out everyone’s schedules. Of course, the talks could fizzle and the whole concept could fall apart.”

After months of no news about the upcoming Friends reboot – especially after the show’s 25th anniversary – and Aniston alluding on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last month that the cast “would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is… We’re working on something.” Fans of the show can only hope that the news about the reunion show gets greenlit, and more details are revealed soon.

At this time, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television have no comment about the status of the project.

Friends will leave Netflix at the end of 2019 and will debut on HBO Max when the platform launches in 2020.
