‘Champions’ Actress Josie Totah Cast As Lead In ‘Saved By The Bell’ Reboot
Published on January 6, 2020.The upcoming reboot of Saved By the Bell has recently cast Josie Totah as the lead!
The beloved 90’s series will launch this year on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock. Totah is most recognized for playing Michael Patel on the Mindy Kaling-produced comedy Champions.
The young actress will join the stars of the original Saved By the Bell including Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley, who will reprise their roles as A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano.
The original series ran from 1989 to 1993 and spanned four seasons.
The upcoming reboot will focus on the story of what happened when California Gov. Zack Morris (played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the original Saved By the Bell) receives backlash for closing several low-income high schools and proposed that the affected students be sent to one of the highest-performing schools in the state – which includes Bayside High. Totah will be cast as the gorgeous and witty cheerleader Lexi, who is admired and feared by the school’s students.
In August 2018, Totah revealed she was transgender in an emotional essay for Time. “In the past, I’ve halfway corrected people by telling them I identify as LGBTQ,” she wrote. “I wasn’t ready to be more specific. I was afraid I wouldn’t be accepted, that I would be embarrassed, that the fans who knew me from the time when I acted in a Disney show would be confused. But I realized over the past few years that hiding my true self is not healthy. I know now, more than ever, that I’m finally ready to take this step toward becoming myself. I’m ready to be free. So, listen up y’all: You can jump on or jump off. Either way this is where I’m heading.”
A premiere date for the series reboot has not been announced.
