‘Doctor Strange’ Filmmaker Scott Derrickson To Direct ‘Labyrinth’ Sequel

Doctor Stranger filmmaker Scott Derrickson will direct the sequel to Jim Henson’s Labyrinth for TriStar Pictures.

It was announced back in January that the filmmaker had departed from the MCU sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences, with the movie being now helmed by Sam Raimi.

Labyrinth was directed by Henson and starred Jennifer Connelly as a teenage girl who must rescue her baby brother from the clutches of Jareth the Goblin King (portrayed by David Bowie) while navigating an enormous maze. Most of the significant characters were played by puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

The fantasy musical sequel is being produced by Lisa Henson of The Jim Henson Company, while Brian Henson will serve as executive producer alongside C. Robert Cargill, and Derrickson. Blanca Lisa, vice president of feature film production, will be leading the sequel for The Jim Henson Company. Lastly, Caellum Allan will supervise with Nicole Brown on behalf of TriStar Pictures.

Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed Into the Dark: My Valentine, will pen the sequel’s script.

Sony announced the Labyrinth sequel on Tuesday, saying the movie has maintained audience popularity for over three decades, which has lead to tie-in novels, comics, video games, screenings and an annual fan masquerade ball.

The late Henson directed Labyrinth and George Lucas executive produced the movie.
