While many child stars in Hollywood have taken a downward spiral due to growing up in the spotlight, Drew Barrymore, 39, was one of the few who were successful at turning it back around and maintaining a successful career and personal life.

In an interview with More magazine, Barrymore looks stunning on the cover and goes into many details with the magazine including her famously troubled past and how her relationship with her parents shaped the kind of parent she is.

“I didn’t really have parents, you know? And therefore the kind of parent I will be is a good, present parent. In a way, maybe that was a detriment to my youth, but it’ll be the biggest asset to my adulthood” she stated of being mom to her own children Olive, 2, and Frankie, 9 months, with husband Will Kopelman.

Of course Barrymore was in rehab at only 14 years old and was emancipated from her parents at age 15, “I was a happy, blithering idiot. I don’t know how to feel differently about it because I don’t know what another life would be like, so it’s hard to pretend or imagine or wish that it was different because it isn’t. Even if I was a bad girl at moments here and there, I was never a bad person.”

As for her acting career taking a backseat since she has had children, Barrymore still has her plate full running her own cosmetics company Flower Beauty but says it is easier for family life.

“I love the beauty industry because even on a workday I can wake up with my kids, go to work, come home, bedtime…there’s a normal life there. And it’s exciting to go on a business trip, as opposed to a film where you;re gone for four months. I can’t do that right now. As you add more onto your plate, particularly family, things have to fall off, or you wont be a good parent.”
