Jamie Brewer Becomes First Model With Down Syndrome To Walk At NYFW

Actress Jamie Brewer made a name for herself after appearing on the hit show American Horror Story for three seasons but now she is making history, becoming the first model with Down syndrome to walk in New York’s Fashion Week.

On Thursday February 12, the 30-year old actress turned model strutted her stuff as part of Carrie Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” campaign.

As to be expected Brewer did an amazing job, showing off one of Hammer’s original designs, earning praise from the designer herself, “Jamie is an activist for intellectual disabilities, she is a writer and artist and amazing actress. Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves and we went with an A-line.”

After her big debut Brewer was asked if she was nervous about her runway walk to which she answered, “I thought I was going to be, but honestly, I just channeled it into excitement,” she told People magazine.

She also went on to explain that she was asked to be a part of the show through a woman name Katie Driscoll who has a campaign called “Changing the Trace of Beauty”, “And Katie asked Carrie if she could have a role model for her daughter Grace, who was around 4 or 5 years old, who has Down syndrome. And Katie knew of my work – my acting work and my work with people with disabilities – and she told Carrie about who I am, and that’s how I got the honor of being involved with Fashion Week.”
