Jim Carrey has broken his silence after the actor was hit with a wrongful death lawsuit in which he is blamed for the death of his late girlfriend Cathriona White.

Last September, White died from a fatal overdose of prescription medications and then just recently her estranged husband Mark Burton filed the wrongful death lawsuit against Carrey claiming he illegally obtained the drugs under the name “Arthur King” and provided them to White.

“What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world,” Carrey said in response to the lawsuit. “I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control.”

The 54-year-old who had split with White in the week before her death concluded, “I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”

Not only is Burton claiming that Carrey obtained and provided White with the drugs knowing her history with depression and a previous suicide attempt, he is also stating that after her death Carrey tried to cover it up by sending a “bogus” text message saying he had “misplaced” the drugs or White had stolen them.
