Universal Pictures’ Scarface reboot is saying hello to filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, who will direct the “new, original take,” and screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen, who penned the latest version of the Scarface reboot script, Entertainment Tonight confirmed.

Before Guadagnino was announced to direct, Antoine Fuqua and Diego Luna were supposed to serve as director and star of the Scarface reboot. However, both Fuqua and Luna dropped out of the project. At this time, a new star has not taken over Luna’s place.

The new Scarface reboot will take place in Los Angeles and reimagine the gangster story told in both Howard Hawks’ 1932 original flick and Brian De Palma’s iconic 1983 retelling, which starred Al Pacino as Tony and Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira.

As of late, Guadagnino is probably best known for the Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer-starring Call Me by Your Name, but his most recent film also happened to be a remake: Guadagnino directed Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton in 2018’s ballet drama/art house horror movie Suspiria, which was adapted from Dario Argento’s 1977 original flick.

Where the Scarface reboot will fit into Guadagnino’s pipeline of projects is yet to be seen. Currently, he is finishing up HBO limited series, We Are Who We Are, and is reportedly set to direct a Lord of the Flies remake. There’s also the highly-anticipated Call Me by Your Name sequel, which he confirmed recently and will see his stars reprise their roles as Elio and Oliver.
