Although it is safe to say Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy had a pretty happy life with fiancee Peta Mergatroyd before welcoming their son, now he says he is happier than ever.

The pair welcomed their son Shai on January 4, and now the new dad is opening up about how his life has changed all for the better in an adorable Instagram post.

Chmerkovisky posted a black and white photo of himself facing a window, holding his son, along with the caption: “It’s been one week plus one day of my fatherhood and I’m the happiest person that’s ever lived. I’m also feeling very protective and now understand what every parent in history have been through for as long as humans have been giving birth.” He continued, “I don’t let too many people come see my son and I don’t want to put any of him on social media just yet. @petamurgatroyd and I just want to enjoy our little family, together with our loved ones, and take in all the precious moments which we’ll  never get back. So be sensitive please. Or not. Either way, hope everyone’s year is off to an incredible start. Our sure started with a bang P.S. Farts, poops and throw-ups are the best!”

The two dancing pros confirmed last May that they were expecting after getting engaged in December of 2015, and Maks did not hold back his excitement after wanting a family for quite some time. “I’ve been ready since I was 21. But now I know that I’m ready, I’m like, ‘Thank God it didn’t happen before.'”
