Twelve years ago Matt Damon, 44,  took on the role of amnesia stricken assassin, Jason Bourne, in the franchise’s first film, The Bourne Identity in 2002 and he recently confirmed he will be back as Bourne in 2016.

Damon reprised his role in the high-intensity action flick in 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy and yet again in 2007 with The Bourne Ultimatum.

After a short hiatus the fourth Bourne movie, The Bourne Legacy, was released in 2012, however this time Damon was absent from the title role, with Jeremy Renner stepping in as another enhanced CIA operative, Aaron Cross.

Universal Pictures confirmed they had plans for more Bourne films and this past weekend, Damon officially confirmed he would be returning for the fifth film.

While Damon didn’t exactly announce the news, it was his best friend Ben Affleck, 42,  who accidentally let Damon’s plans slip.

When the buddies were on the red carpet for a Project Greenlight event, E! News asked Matt about dealing with Ben when he has his Batman muscles.

Ben responded with, “Well, he’s going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I’ve just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness,” he joked.

When asked for clarification from Damon he stated, “Yes, next year. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

The pair, who have been best friends for countless years, can now add gym buddies to their list as they both prep for their physically demanding roles as Jason Bourne and Batman respectively.
