Sometimes we forget that Selena Gomez is only 22.

The actress and pop star opened up about her rise to fame, admitting, “It’s been such a transitional year for me—I moved out of my parents’ house this year and into my own place. Sometimes, I’ll be honest, I don’t handle all of this as well as people think, so it’s been important to really figure out what makes me feel grounded.”

That involves staying close to family and friends. Selena has also been spotted attending bible study sessions, and she once entered a rehab facility, not for drug or alcohol use, but just to take a little time for herself.

Unlike some of her fellow former Disney stars, Selena doesn’t feel the need to shed that image completely. “I was on Wizards of Waverly Place from when I was 14 until I was 18 or 19 and I thank God for that show—it gave me a legitimate family,” she explained. “The whole cast and crew were all there before anything started, they saw me at my best and at my worst, and could call me out on my s–t.”

She’s also starting to realize that being a woman in the entertainment industry is a special thing — check out the video to see her comments about that! Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Beyonce have all been criticized for shying away from the word “feminism,” so it’ll be interesting to see how everyone reacts to Selena’s position.
