Team America: World Police Pulled After Put In Place Of The Interview

On Wednesday December 17, Sony Pictures announced that they had decided to cancel the release of the film The Interview, a satirical comedy based around a plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

After a huge hacking scandal that led to an eventual terrorist threat on theaters that show the film, many of the independent movie chains decided not to risk their guest’s or staff’s safety and refused to screen the movie and forcing Sony to scrap it all together.

As a result of the outright cancelation, theaters now have open showtimes previously held for The Interview and one Texas theater, as well as a few other had decided on another controversial film to fill in the slots, and now that has been pulled as well.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Dallas/Fort Worth was going to instead show the 2004 film, Team America: World Police, a film in which the villain is Kim Jong-il, the father to Kim Jong-un.

“We cam confirm that the screening of TEAM AMERICA was cancelled as the film was pulled from release. We are issuing refunds to those that purchased tickets,” the cinema said in a statement.

“We’re just trying to make the best of an unfortunate situation,” the theater’s creative manager and programmer James Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter.

After Sony’s statement of ending the release of The Interview, the Alamo Drafthouse tweeted out, “FOR THE RECORD: We were still going to show #TheInterviewMovie…” and in a second tweet continued, “…but now we’ll be showing TEAM AMERICA in it’s place…for FREE (DOM). Because AMERICA, F YEAH.”
