On the finale of season seven of The Voice, country rocker Craig Wayne Boyd from Team Blake took home the championship title but afterwards revealed he was very close to not being in the competition at all.
The easy-going guy worked his butt off on the show, taking all advice to heart and even agreed to a mini-makeover, anything to make himself a better performer.
His incredible talent matched with his determined personality led Boyd to be the last man standing from Shelton’s team, going up against three from Team Adam and his win was extremely well deserved, but through everything, no one knew the struggles he had gone through.
Holding his trophy and trying to wrap around what just happened for himself, his family and his career, Boyd admitted he thought he was done with singing only a day before an email came through asking him to audition.
“I remember a little more than a year ago, sitting in a pick-up outside of a club after I had played to basically no one and talking with my drummer and saying, ‘Listen, I may have to quit because it’s not paying my bills. I’m losing my house…lost my pick-up. I didn’t know what I was going to do… and him telling me, ‘Dude you can’t do that.
“And then just randomly, the opportunity came up to go audition a few months out for The Voice and I was like ‘You know what, I’m gonna go do that.’ I remember the email coming in just the day after having that conversation,” he revealed.
Meanwhile Coach Blake was ecstatic for Boyd and his own fourth win on the show and discussed the rivalry between fellow judge and best friend, Adam Levine.
“Will I rub it in Adam’s face? He may quit the show before I’m done rubbing this in his face. But what’s awesome is this guy holding this trophy. It’s unbelievable.”
