Valerie Bertinelli has filed for legal separation from husband Tom Vitale after 10 years of marriage.
According to PEOPLE, The Food Network star filed the documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday. In the documents, Bertinelli cites “irreconcilable differences” between the couple as the reason for the split. Bertinelli has not filed for a dissolution of marriage at this time. The records also state that the couple has a premarital agreement in place that they will be following.
Bertinelli and Vitale tied the knot in January 2011 after several years of dating. The couple first met when they were introduced by Bertinelli’s brother, Patrick.
Bertinelli opened up about her thoughts on their new relationship status during an appearance on The View shortly after the wedding. “I think I got tired of calling him ‘my spousal equivalent,’ ” the actress said at the time. “It’s nice to call him my husband. It feels appropriate.”
Bertinelli was previously married to Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007 with whom she had her 30-year-old son, Wolfgang. Eddie tragically passed in October 2020 at the age of 65. Following his passing, Bertinelli opened up about her grief. “You never like this new normal but that’s what it is,” she said. “It’s about finding a way to survive this new normal… which many people are doing. This whole year unfortunately has been about death and grieving and loss.”
