When Lifetime’s biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, (based on the life of pop star and actress Aaliyah who tragically died in a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22) aired this past weekend, many were not impressed.

Aaliyah’s long time friend and collaborator Timbaland took to both Twitter and Instagram to display his anger over the film and its portrayals.

Along with calling the film “bulls–t”, he also took aim at the executive producer, Wendy Williams when he posted, “Wendy Williams, you know you f–ked up, right?”

However, it seems Williams doesn’t think she messed up at all and defended her choices with the movie in an interview on Monday November 17.

“As a black woman, I was proud to show that Aaliyah came from a two-parent family, which many of us don’t.”

She also went on to defend her portrayals of celebrities like Timbaland, Missy Elliot and R. Kelly who Aaliyah was rumored to have married at only 15 when he was 27.

“[The film] painted R.Kelly…in a more tasteful light than perhaps other would. It was [also] extremely tasteful not to show [Aaliyah] going down in a fiery wreck,” she stated of the ending that goes to a title card to explain the stars death.

Overall the backlash she has received both from Timbaland as well as fans has not phased Williams at all.

“I must tell you, whether you loved or hated [it], you watched. It was the second highest-rated movie on all of cable this year so far. Not just Lifetime, but all of cable.”
