Things You Might Not Know About Carrie Underwood And Mike Fisher’s Relationship

Published on June 16, 2016. Updated July 7, 2020

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher are yet another adorable celebrity-athlete couple that fans just can’t get enough of. Despite extremely different paths to success and fame and different careers as celebrities, they are absolutely perfect for each other and after almost a decade together it seems they are more in love than ever. While she is one of country music’s biggest stars and he is a star NHL player, they are very skilled at keeping their lives out of the spotlight. Since they are just so adorable and fans love them, take a look at 10 things you never knew about their relationship!

10. Meeting

While celebrities and athletes often do end up at the same events sometimes, it doesn’t happen that often, especially for a hockey player from Canada who was, at the time, playing for a Canadian team, and a country superstar from Oklahoma living in Nashville. Lucky for the pair they just happened to have a mutual friend in Underwood’s bassist Mark Childers. Obviously, Fisher was interested so Childers suggested it to Underwood who at first thought, “I mean, can I make dating more difficult? Let’s get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome.” Eventually she did agree to meet Fisher and Childers was able to set up a meet-and-greet for the pair following one of her concerts in 2008!

9. Wasn’t Easy

Despite there being an initial attraction and Underwood being very happy to have agreed to meeting Fisher, it wasn’t easy for the pair to actually date because of Underwood’s initial concern: Fisher lives in another country and travels a lot for work, while she lives in America and also travels a lot. As it turns out their “dating” consisted of them talking on the phone for three months before they were even able to meet up again face-to-face for an actual date! The two didn’t have their first real date until New Year’s Eve 2008. “That was good for us. Our first real date was on New Year’s Eve, and our first kiss was when the ball dropped,” Underwood said of their difficult dating process.

8. Trade Drama

On February 10, 2011 things really worked out for the gorgeous couple when Fisher was traded from the Ottawa Senators in Canada to the Nashville Predators in Tennessee, right in the heart of the country music world. Immediately many speculated that it was due to his marriage to Underwood that prompted the trade which was conveniently to where she had made a life as a country star. After an Ottawa radio station joked they would never play a Carrie Underwood song because of the trade, Fisher responded, “obviously Carrie had nothing to do with the move or the trade or anything so to imply something like that was just wrong.”

7. Wealth

When it comes to the pair, they both stand out in their respective careers which means their wealth is hard to be matched. Underwood’s success is almost unprecedented and alone she has a current estimated net worth of $85 million! Fisher’s own net worth doesn’t come close, but is still very substantial as he is reportedly worth $30 million, making them quite the powerful athlete-celebrity duo.

6. Dating History

Despite being a major star, Underwood was never very open about her dating life prior to being with Fisher. In an interview in 2011 she did admit she had a thing for the “bad boys” and recalled her first kiss. “My first kiss happened at 14. It was with a skater guy who had long hair and baggy jeans. He didn’t live in my town, and I was attracted to him because he was different from the other boys at school … at that time he was as dangerous as I could get.” She also recalled that she was dumped by her college boyfriend and stated, “It taught me a lot about myself, that I didn’t like getting my heart broken and that sometimes people don’t love you back.” She didn’t steer clear of athletes or celebrities, however, as she dated Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in 2007 and stated afterwards he “did me wrong” and then in 2008 she dated Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford and then stated it felt more like a “publicity stunt” and they broke up over text. Needless to say, she has never had love like she does with Mike Fisher and in fact she has stated previously, “He’s the only guy I’ve never had to worry about. Any guy I’ve ever dated, there would always be that doubt: ‘He didn’t answer his phone. What’s he doing? It’s late. I’m not the crazy-girlfriend type, but there was a little voice in the back of my head. I don’t have to worry about Mike. I don’t think twice. He’s going out? I don’t care; it doesn’t bother me. I don’t bat an eye.”

5. Religion

For Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood one of the biggest factors in their relationship, and whether it would work out or not was seeing eye-to-eye on their beliefs. Underwood has always been vocal about her Christianity and its importance in her life which is something she was looking for in a boyfriend/husband and something she found in Fisher who is a devout Christian. In an interview with Oprah the pair explained how much it meant to them. Fisher explained, “Spiritually we’re able to be on the same page and understood each other … and now it’s a big part of our marriage.” Fisher also stated that one of the first things he gave Underwood was a copy of The Purpose Driven Life, so they could both read it and talk about it together.

4. Wedding

The two dated for a year before becoming engaged in December 2009. On July 10, 2010 they wed at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge at the Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia, and had a guest list exceeding 250 people! Underwood surprised Fisher at the wedding by having one of their favorite singers Brandon Heath sing the song “Love Never Fails” for their first dance.

3. Waiting

Given her devout beliefs it isn’t too surprising that Carrie Underwood waited until her wedding night with Mike Fisher to have sex for the first time at the age of 27.

2. Divorce Rumors

Even though Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher have done nothing but support each other and gush about each other in interviews, like all famous couples they have consistently been plagued by rumors of divorce. These rumors got worse following the birth of their son Isaiah. According to the “reports” at the time, Fisher wanted to have another child right away, and wanted Carrie to take another year or two off so that they could have children close in age. The reports also stated that it had become a huge issue in their marriage because Carrie thought it was unfair that she had to put her career on hold while he was still able to play hockey. Of course, nothing came of the rumors and the pair have not had a second child, but at the time the sheer number of rumors of divorce definitely made it seem things weren’t as great in the marriage as it seemed.

1. Home Life

While Fisher was still playing for the Ottawa Senators, the pair bought a mansion on eleven acres near the city and later sold the property for $2.2 million after he got traded. In 2012, they bought a luxurious cottage just outside of Nashville and are currently still in the process of building their dream home on a large property also near Nashville.
