7 Most Shocking Bachelor/Bachelorette Breakups

Published on June 7, 2017. Updated June 8, 2017

Most fans don’t usually expect to see the beginning of a 65 year long marriage when watching The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. However, once in a blue moon, there are couples that seem to defy all odds and find the happily ever after we’re all looking for. Some couples, despite being ridiculously cute all season, don’t have that luck. Here are several Bachelor Nation breakups that shocked us all.

7.  Lauren Bushnell and Ben Higgins (The Bachelor season 20)

Despite Ben shockingly confessing his love for two contestants during his season, none were surprised when he asked Lauren to be his bride. From the beginning, the two had a calm and sweet connection and we all thought they would be the couple that could make it work. However, on May 15th of this year, Ben and Lauren announced their split and it was a slap in the face for fans of the couple. The full details of the split have yet to be revealed, but Lauren has stated that for her the emotional connection fizzled out. Although we’re sad to see the couple part ways, they are both equally sweet and charming, so love can’t be too far around the corner.

6. Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez (The Bachelorette season 6)

Roberto had been the season’s front runner as his immediate connection with Ali was undeniable. Not only did Roberto win the first impression rose, but through a drama-filled season that included men walking out on Ali, Roberto acted as her rock. He was one of the most consistent men on the that seemed to genuinely make Ali happy. However it wasn’t until their split in 2011 that the skeletons came out of the closet. Although we all knew Roberto was traditional, we didn’t expect it to cause such a rift in the relationship. It was a shock to hear that Roberto did not want Ali to have a career which would lead to explosive fights.

5. Emily Maynard and Jef Holm (The Bachelorette season 8)

Who didn’t swoon when they heard Emily call Jef her best friend once they went public with their relationship? Throughout the season it was easy to see how Jef captured Emily’s heart by genuinely caring about her daughter Ricki and made sure she felt comfortable through the process. I’m sure no one was surprised when Emily accepted Jef’s proposal at the end of the season. However, rumors of fighting and potential infidelity seemed to be the cause of the couple’s demise, much to our surprise. Although Emily is happily married now, we’re still sad “Jemily” didn’t stand the test of time.

4. Aaron Buerge & Helene Eksterowicz (The Bachelor season 2)

I don’t think anyone was more shocked by this breakup than Helene. Not too long after Aaron’s proposals, Aaron called off the engagement due to lack of emotional investment. Helene and fans of the show were shocked to hear that Aaron had called off their whirlwind romance while the two were in a Starbucks. Oh yes, the man so confident in his relationship that he proposed to her twice eventually broke up with her while in a coffee shop.

3. Andy Baldwin and Tessa Horst (The Bachelor season 10)

Despite an awkward first impression that involved a joke about muffins, the couple was able to pull through and break the curse of the previous four seasons in which no proposals were made. Even at the After the Final Rose special when the couple had time without the cameras and magic of the show, they still seemed head over heels in love. However, shortly after the finale the couple announced that they had broken off their engagement, and then several weeks later they called off the entire relationship! The initial shock came with the cancelled engagement announcement as we all saw those two walking down the aisle, but once that fantasy was over, not many were shocked by the final split.

2. Lorenzo Borghese and Jennifer Wilson (The Bachelor season 9)

It turned out that Jennifer wasn’t the right princess for the Italian noble man. Although Lorenzo did not officially propose to Jennifer, he did giver her a family heirloom as a promise ring.  Truth be told, Lorenzo suggesting they test what the “real world” feels like together as a couple before making it official made complete sense! Lorenzo and Jennifer seemed so level-headed and calm about their love for each other that we all hoped one day there would be a wedding. Not only did the couple break up a couple of months later, Lorenzo went on to date runner up Sadie Murray (they eventually broke up as well).

1. Jason Mesnick and Melissa Rycroft (The Bachelor season 13).

This whole break up was a shocking hot mess. Jason surprised us all when he publicly broke up with Melissa during the After the Final Rose special. Not only did Jason break Melissa’s heart on national television, to really add salt to the wound, Jason then professed his feelings for runner up Molly Malaney! Jason ended up making the right decision as he and Molly have since been married and have a child together.
