8 Youngest Celebrities To Go To Rehab
Published on October 15, 2015. Updated October 23, 2015When people become famous at a young age, they often get caught up in an overwhelming party scene. Plus, teenagers don’t even have fully developed brains that help them navigate action and consequences. A sad outcome is that celebrities sometimes end up spending time in rehab while other kids are getting their drivers licenses or attending the prom. Here are eight of the youngest celebrities to go to rehab. You’ll notice a trend of going to rehab for vague reasons:
8. Lindsay Lohan
Before her 21st birthday, Lindsay Lohan had already been to rehab twice. Her first stint was in January 2007 and her second was in May 2007 after she was busting for driving under the influence. Less than two weeks after her second rehab stint, she was arrested a third time for possession of cocaine, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. “I am not blaming anyone else for my conduct other than myself,” she said in a statement. “I very much want to be healthy and gain control of my life and career and have asked for medical help in doing so.” Lindsay has found herself back in rehab three more times since this, but she now seems to have found a way to stay out of trouble.

Pop star Selena Gomez was only 22 years old when she checked herself into the Dawn of Meadows rehab center in Arizona for two weeks in 2014. “Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but not for substance abuse,” her rep said in a statement. Selena said in her own statement, “It has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be.” Selena reportedly went to the facility for emotional issues (some people think that her relationship with Justin Bieber was a big part of that). After leaving Dawn of Meadows, Selena wrote on Instagram, “I’ve done everything I could to the best of my ability. Thank you for the unconditional love and cyber hugs. You inspire me.”

Another pop star who went to rehab at a young age is Demi Lovato. In 2010, she entered a three month rehab for “emotional and physical issues” when she was only 17 years old. She almost went back in 2013 specifically for food and body issues; “It’s been difficult. I almost went back to rehab for my eating disorder last summer. I was obsessing over food and terrified of it at the same time,” she told Us Weekly magazine in 2014. In the past couple years, she’s become an outspoken advocate for body positivity. “It helps to remind myself how far I’ve come,” she continued. “I recently saw pictures from my first tour, and I spent that whole summer performing in the heat in a red leather jacket because I was ashamed to show my arms. And that was when I was 105 pounds! This tour, I’ve had the confidence to show my arms at every single concert. It may seem like a small thing, but for me, that’s huge.”

A professional actress before she was even a year old, Drew Barrymore grew up way too fast: according to Wikipedia, she regularly hung out at Studio 54 when she was a little girl, smoked cigarettes at the age of nine, drank alcohol by the time she was eleven, smoked marijuana at the age of twelve and did cocaine at the age of thirteen. When she was just fourteen, her mother put her in a rehab facility. She even tried to commit suicide. Luckily, Drew got clean, wrote about her experience in an autobiography called Little Girl Lost and later experienced a big career resurgence. “I went to hell and back,” Drew said in an interview. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Then I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in happy about life and comfortable in my skin. Everything is fate.”

Tallulah Willis, the youngest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, entered rehab last year at the age of 20. She wrote (and later deleted) a tweet saying “bai bai” in July before she went. But instead of drinking or drugs, insiders say Tallulah struggled with body dysmorphia and mental issues. “She’s been dealing with some unhappiness, and everything sort of came to a head,” a source told The Daily News. Tallulah herself also said in a video, “I struggled a lot when I was younger” and that she was “diagnosed with body dysmorphia.”

Fashion Police star Kelly Osbourne has been to rehab four different times. The first time she went, she was only 19 years old; she went again the next year. It’s a family issue: her father Ozzy and her brother Jack have also been to rehab. “I have to take every day as it comes,” Kelly told People magazine around the time she went to rehab for a third stint. “This is a disease. I was born with it. I’ll die with it.” But she’s cautiously optimistic. “I just want to be happy,” she said. “Anything is better than the way it was.” In 2014, she entered a different kind of rehab: “food rehab.” When she gained almost twenty pounds after her breakup from fiance Matthew Mosshart, Kelly entered a facility to help her lose weight.

The daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, Ireland Baldwin is only 19 years old, but she’s already been to rehab. The model, who has appeared in Elle, W Magazine and Vanity Fair, went to the SOBA rehab facility earlier this year. We’re noticing a theme here: like other young celebs, Ireland said the three weeks of treatment for “emotional trauma” and not drug or alcohol addiction; “just get away for a little bit,” she wrote to her Twitter followers, adding, “Someday I’ll feel ready to share my story.” A source dished to People magazine: “She’s just been in some tough situations lately, and it’s gotten a bit stressful and overwhelming, so she’s just being proactive. She’s in there to get the tools she needs to move forward in a positive direction.” When Ireland left the facility, she debuted a new brown hair color.

Before becoming a mom and a successful jewelry designer, reality star Nicole Richie was a big-time party girl. When she was just 23, she got a wake-up call when she was arrested for heroin possession. “I got tired of it. A few arrests helped. A few hours in jail will do that to you,” Nicole said in a later interview. “Once you see the consequences are real.” She went to a rehab facility in Arizona, and then starred on The Simple Life wheb she got out. Unfortunately, Nicole slipped back into her old habits and was arrested again in 2007, this time for driving under the influence. She was required to complete a program afterward.
