Social Media Takes Aim at “Vogue” After Kim and Kanye Land Cover
Published on March 26, 2014.(LOS ANGELES) — Style is obviously in the eye of the beholder, but the Internet hasn’t taken the news that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have landed their first Vogue cover very well.
The collective social media backlash was palpable. Many seemed to think that Kimye (as Kardashian and West are known to be called) are simply too déclassé for the cover of fashion’s most coveted magazine – for the record they join the likes of Rhianna, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, who have all landed Vogue cover shoots – while others, including the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, defended the decision.
Some directed their wrath away from the couple and instead tweeted at Wintour and photographer Annie Leibovitz, who got her first taste of Twitter joining less than 24 hours ago.
Among the death threats and crass calls, other personalities seemed to jump in on the social media shellacking, which quickly became associated with the hashtag #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple.
Sarah Michelle Gellar tweeted, “Well……I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???” Her message was retweeted over 8,000 times.
Kim’s best friend Jonathan Cheban wasn’t too happy with that, as he wrote on Twitter, “Do u matter? RT @RealSMG: Well……I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???”
And of course Seth Rogan and James Franco followed up their spoof of Kanye West’s music video with this photoshopped image.
