Golden Globe Red Carpet Looks From Past Years Ranked

We’ve seen quite a few memorable fashion moments at the annual Golden Globes throughout the years! Some stuck in our memory for their unique characteristics such as color or a dramatic detail, but others are unforgettable because they were simply disappointing. From Cate Blanchett’s awkward embroidered pantsuit to Anne Hathaway’s glittering navy number, follow along for the red carpet hits and misses from the Golden Globes in year’s past:

32. Miss: Jessica Chastain

Unfortunately, we weren’t the biggest fans of Jessica Chastain’s black beaded look from the 2019 Golden Globes awards. The Burberry look featured a corset bodice, sheer cape detailing and beaded draping along the skirt. While we love all the drama of this look, it simply seemed to miss the mark when it came to using proportions that flattered Chastain’s figure. The corset seemed to hit her hips at the wrong spot and the draping drowned her slender figure.

31. Hit: Regina King — 2019

Regina King was an absolute bombshell on the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet. She opted for an Alberta Ferretti dress in a dazzling shade of rose gold that flattered her complexion and features flawlessly. It hugged her curves in the best way possible and truly left us speechless!

30. Miss: Judy Greer — 2019

Masculine tuxedo dressing is one of our favorite looks for women to wear on the red carpet, but Judy Greer totally missed the mark with this trend at the 2019 Golden Globes. The wide-leg pants drowned her figure and the tuxedo and bow tie combo was far too sharp and harsh.

29. Hit: Sandra Oh — 2019

Sandra Oh had a stunning red carpet moment at the 2019 Golden Globes. The co-host and Golden Globe winner definitely had a monumental evening with a wardrobe to match! We love all the flattering ruching on this dress and her old Hollywood-inspired finger waves.

28. Miss: Kate Hudson — 2018

Kate Hudson stepped out on the 2018 Golden Globes red carpet wearing a seriously revealing look. Her gown featured a plunging U-shaped neckline and was crafted with a mesh fabric along the bodice and waist. The dress featured a black velvet belt and a completely sheer, wispy skirt. With this look, we wish Kate had opted for either a revealing top or skirt rather than both! Since both the bodice and skirt were sheer, the look just bared a little too much skin at the classy event.

27. Hit: Dakota Johnson — 2018

No one could forget Dakota Johnson’s stunning and unique Golden Globes dress from 2018. Although the front of her gown was relatively simple with a straight-cut neckline, dainty spaghetti straps and a minimalistic sparkling brooch, the back of her dress was truly inspiring! The back featured a crystal-embellished bow design that trailed into a spattering of sparkles all along the back of her dress and left us absolutely speechless.

26. Miss: Sarah Jessica Parker — 2018

Sarah Jessica Parker will forever have high expectations on the red carpet after playing the ultra-fabulous Carrie Bradshaw for years on television, which is why this look for the 2018 Golden Globes was all the more disappointing. The star opted for a corset gown with strange meshing along the bodice, sleeves, and skirt. To make matters worse, the gown cut awkwardly at her ankles which simply made her look frumpy. We would have much preferred a gown with a little more fabric to reach the floor and a little less embellishment.

25. Hit: Jessica Biel — 2018

Jessica Biel looked absolutely dazzling on the 2018 Golden Globes red carpet where she donned a princess-style Dior gown. The look featured a sweetheart neckline and was covered entirely in sheer black tulle over a nude underlay. For an extra dose of unique detail, the dress featured a flattering velvet detail that curved over the front of the dress. Biel pulled her hair back into an elegant updo and added a punch of color with a berry-tinted lip.

24. Miss: Beyonce — 2003

Beyonce is a typical red carpet show stopper, but back in 2003 fans were completely underwhelmed with her choice of attire at the Golden Globes. This look was definitely from Beyonce’s Destiny’s Child era which was seemingly a period of her life where she struggled with her style. This look was slightly too feminine and foofy for the edgy, bold fashionista we know Beyonce as today. The Cinderella cut just doesn’t align with her signature style and the overall quite safe look definitely left fans feeling disappointed.

23. Hit: Charlize Theron — 2012

Charlize Theron stunned at the 2012 Golden Globes when she stepped out wearing this dramatic blush number! The dazzling Dior couture gown featured a deep V-neckline and an exaggerated ruffled detailing along the hip that was cinched with a sparkling brooch. To add even more glamour, Charlize topped her look with a matching glittering headband. The dress also featured an extravagant high slit detailing that showed off her long, slender legs and strappy nude heels!

22. Miss: Cate Blanchett — 2002

Cate Blanchett stepped out at the 2002 Golden Globes wearing a completely unexpected outfit! Instead of opting for a dress, Blanchett chose a pinstripe pantsuit with strange embellishment throughout and a billowing balloon sleeve. We definitely love a smartly tailored pantsuit, but this particular look seemed sloppy and definitely aged her. We’d have much preferred a pantsuit that showed a little more skin or a flowing dress with a touch of minimal embroidery!

21. Hit: Lupita Nyong’o — 2014

Lupita Nyong’o was absolutely radiant on the 2014 Golden Globes red carpet when she stepped out wearing a sleek red Ralph Lauren number. The look was a crowd favorite and topped nearly every best-dressed list at the time! The bright garment featured clean lines but was still dramatic with its sultry off the shoulder neckline and glamorous floor-length cape.

20. Miss: Regina King — 2016

Regina King’s Golden Globes dress from 2016 definitely turned heads, but we’re not entirely sure it was for the right reasons! The gold, sequined Krikor Jabotian gown was undeniably bold, which is typically a fashion move we would respect, but the white cape just seemed a little over the top! The dress itself was already quite chaotic which made the cape seem out of place.

19. Hit: Michelle Williams — 2012

Michelle Williams undeniably turned heads back in 2012 when she stepped out in this midnight blue number designed by Jason Wu. The evening gown featured a sleek shape and long sleeves that were sheer yet demure. The dress was crafted with a crushed velvet material and eye-catching pattern that was subtle yet still made a statement by being super unique.

18. Miss: Kate Hudson — 2003

Kate Hudson’s bohemian-inspired Valentino gown from 2003 was undeniably memorable, but looking back we can admit it seems a little too casual. Bohemian looks tend to be quite laidback which makes us question whether they have a place on the formal awards show red carpet. A bohemian-inspired accessory or hairstyle is one thing, but an entire dress just seems too much. Aside from this casual factor, the variety of prints seemed to clash and look overly loud.

17. Hit: Scarlett Johansson — 2011

Back in 2011, Scarlett Johansson stepped out on the Golden Globes red carpet wearing a glamorous beaded Ellie Saab gown that most definitely caught attention. The gown featured feminine fluttery sleeves and a tulle train that added definition and glamour. The gorgeous actress wore her hair in a coiffed updo which allowed her luminous skin and rosy smokey eye to truly shine.

16. Miss: Helena Bonham Carter — 2011

Helena Bonham Carter most definitely made an entrance when she appeared on the 2011 Golden Globe red carpet! This look was extreme and quite chaotic from the varying prints and mismatched textures. The look featured an abstract print alongside black tulle, which we’re not sure worked well together. The entire look was confusing, but even more so with the mismatched red and green pumps that she wore!

15. Hit: Jessica Alba — 2012

Jessica Alba has been a constant red carpet showstopper throughout her years in the spotlight, but especially at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards! The glowing actress wore a lavender Gucci gown that featured a strapless neckline and silver glittering beading throughout. The column style gown was flattering on her slender figure and even more so with the added dark purple ribbon detailing that cinched at her waist. She pulled her hair into a sleek updo which showed off her toned upper body and luminous skin in the most elegant way possible.

14. Miss: Lara Flynn Boyle — 2003

Lara Flynn Boyle definitely surprised Golden Globe viewers when she stepped out wearing this ballerina-inspired look on the 2003 red carpet! The dress quickly became infamous and people still talk about it over a decade later! At the time, fashion critics pegged the dress to be just as questionable as Bjork’s well-known swan dress. The designer, however, disagreed and argued, “That was a little more Sesame Street,” while explaining the couture fashion expertise that was put into the design of the tulle ballerina look.

13. Hit: Drew Barrymore — 2010

Drew Barrymore wore the perfect mix of old Hollywood and modern glamour with the Atelier Versace nude gown she wore to the 2010 Golden Globes! The dazzling gown featured a ruched detail on the hip that flattered her figure and made her body look tight and slender. The champagne silk gown featured dramatic shoulder and hip embellishment that was avant-garde and bold without being over the top. She slicked her hair into an elegant side-parted bun and wore a classic muted red pout on her lips.

12. Miss: Sarah Jessica Parker — 2003

Sarah Jessica Parker’s look for the Golden Globes in 2003 definitely fell short of our expectations. Her all-black look consisted of a tight corset top, black silk trousers and strange tulle layering draped over one arm. The look was definitely not comparable in the slightest to some of Parker’s previous couture gowns and extravagant garments, which left this fashion moment as highly disappointing.

11. Hit: Anne Hathaway — 2009

The ever-stunning Anne Hathaway stepped out at the 2009 Golden Globes and wowed everyone with her Armani Prive dark indigo gown. The strapless number was beaded with Swarovski crystals along the bodice and flourished into a full skirt made of layers of tulle and organza. The striking blue shade flattered her porcelain complexion, especially in combination with her smooth dark updo and sultry crimson pout.

10. Miss: Courtney Love — 2000

Courtney Love’s outfit from the 2000 Golden Globes might be one of the all-time riskiest red carpet looks. The Galliano slinky number featured an entirely shredded bodice that seemed like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. Despite the shredded skirt showing a pretty layer of sequins underneath, the entire look just seemed messy and not near formal enough for a classy awards show.

9. Hit: Sienna Miller — 2007

Sienna Miller absolutely dazzled on the 2007 Golden Globe red carpet in this bohemian-inspired look! The dress she wore was a metallic Marchesa design that featured a drop-style waist which was completely embellished with silver applique and embellishment. The neckline was elegant and flattering with it’s slight off the shoulder cut and the crisp color made her sunkissed glow really pop. She swept her hair into a braided updo and topped the look with a matching metallic clutch.

8. Miss: Sarah Michelle Gellar — 2012

Sarah Michelle Gellar most definitely made a bold choice when she stepped out wearing an abstract Monique Lhuillier gown at the 2012 Golden Globes! The tie-dye print is one that very rarely makes an appearance on the red carpet, and after seeing this fashion moment, we feel it is for good reason. The print is just a little too casual for the red carpet and makes the look appear quite juvenile.

7. Hit: Nicole Kidman — 2005

Nicole Kidman stunned in this unique satin Gucci gown at the annual Golden Globe Awards back in 2005! The stunning royal blue body-skimming number featured a dramatic peacock feather strap over one shoulder that was the perfect amount of couture detailing. The bright sapphire shade made for a seriously memorable red carpet moment, especially in combination with her embellished clutch that picked up perfectly on the mossy shades of her shoulder strap.

6. Miss: Nicole Kidman — 2017

The frothy Alexander McQueen number that Nicole Kidman wore to the 2017 Golden Globes most definitely caused some buzz following the event! The sparkling frock consisted of sheer paneling, swirling sparkles, feathers, and tulle. There were aspects of this look that was definitely redeemable, but the entire outfit sadly did not come together well and simply had too much going on. Kidman defended her look and explained the rationale behind her outfit choice. “I was trying all the frocks on and when Zi put this on [my girls] both jumped up and said, ‘Mummy, you look like a beautiful fairy on that dress’, so that was it,” she explained. “I stopped trying on any of the others and said to them that I’m wearing the fairy dress to the Globes. It’s not really what I would normally wear, but it made the girls happy.”

5. Hit: Jennifer Garner — 2007

Jennifer Garner was a bronzed beauty at the 2007 Golden Globes when she stepped out wearing a crisp white Gaultier gown! The vintage number was tracked down courtesy of her stylist Rachel Zoe and featured a sleek silhouette complete with silver stud and sequin detailing trailing along the skirt in a geometric design. Sometimes simplicity is key when it comes to fashion, and this striking red carpet moment by Garner definitely rings true to that notion!

4. Miss: Cher — 2010

Cher is definitely a Hollywood star that doesn’t shy away from a risk or two on the red carpet! Although we love this edginess about her, we can’t say we’re fans of the 2010 Golden Globe red carpet look she wore. The sleek black gown featured an open bodice that laced up at the front. The look simply seemed too risky of a wardrobe malfunction and didn’t seem tasteful or classy for a formal awards show.

3. Hit: Eva Mendes — 2009

Brunette beauty Eva Mendes was bronzed and glowing at the 2009 Golden Globes where she stepped out wearing a dramatic white Dior dress. The fashion-forward moment was ultra-bold with the billowing hip detailing but the basic shape of the dress was strapless, sleek and flattering which still kept everything feeling somewhat minimal. She paired the crisp number with a bold robin egg blue necklace that kept things glamorous, eye-catching and totally swoon-worthy.

2. Miss: Diane Kruger — 2005

Diane Kruger is typically a red carpet trendsetter and often opts for designs that are atypical, which is exactly what makes her fabulous! This particular Golden Globe look, however, was definitely one of her looks that were more risky than rewarding. It’s clear Kruger was going for a Gatsby-inspired look with the flapper-style waves and glittering texture of the dress, but the shape was undeniably questionable. The star bared a little too much skin for our liking and this look felt a little too theatrical for an elegant red carpet.

1. Hit: Cameron Diaz — 2009

Cameron Diaz was the definition of pretty in pink when she stepped out at the 2009 Golden Globes wearing this one-shoulder frothy number! The satin Chanel garment was a red carpet all-star and landed the blonde beauty on virtually every best-dressed list in 2009. The dress was totally feminine from the dainty texture, ruffled hemline, and candy pink color! She paired the gown with sparkling metallic silver shoes and let her hair fall loosely around her shoulders in beach waves.
