Beloved actor Robbie Coltrane, who was perhaps best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films, has passed away. He was 72.

Multiple outlets reported the actor’s passing on Friday, October 14. Reports indicate Coltrane passed in a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland.

“Robbie will probably be best remembered for decades to come as Hagrid … a role which brought joy to children and adults alike, prompting a stream of fan letters every week for over 20 years,” his agent told the BBC.

Aside from Harry Potter, the actor had many other memorable roles including in the James Bond films GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999) in which he played Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky.

According to reports, J.K Rowling had Coltrane at the top of her list to play Hagrid and, when asked whom she would like to see in the role, responded “Robbie Coltrane for Hagrid” in one quick breath.

He received several accolades over his career, including multiple British Academy Television Awards.

While a cause of death has not been revealed, there have been several reports of Coltrane’s ailing health over the past few years. Back in 2015 the actor was hospitalized following a flight in late January. Coltrane’s agent spoke out about the incident to BBC News on Friday January 30, 2015 only saying that the actor was currently “resting” but “would be fine” without releasing any further details about his illness or condition.
