The past year has been anything but easy for country superstar Carrie Underwood, but the singer is ready to move forward with the release of her newest song “Cry Pretty.”

The release of the song marks the singer’s first single off of her upcoming sixth studio album, and her first single released since 2016’s “Dirty Laundry.” Underwood dropped the new song early on Wednesday, April 11, ahead of her performance of the single at the American Country Music (ACM) awards on Sunday, April 15. The awards show will mark Underwood’s first stage performance since an accident outside of her Nashville home in November in which she suffered multiple injuries, including a broken wrist and damage to her face that resulted in 40 to 50 stitches.

Ahead of releasing the song on April 11, the 35-year-old took to her website and shared in a blog post what “Cry Pretty” means to her. “The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back. It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life,” Underwood explained. “It’s emotional. It’s real. And it ROCKS!”

She added that there is more new music on the way as she gets ready for the release of her new album. “I’ve been in the studio writing and singing a TON, but I’ve also been able to be creative in a way that I’ve never been before, which has been very fulfilling and empowering,” she said.

“While I was writing last year, I met a writer/producer named David Garcia. We hit it off in a big way and I’m excited to say that we are co-producing my album together. I’ve always been lucky to have a voice in the writing and recording process, but this is the first time I am this involved in the production of my music,” Underwood continued. “It’s been challenging and incredibly rewarding to be involved in every aspect from start to finish. David has been an amazing teacher and partner, and I’m so proud of what we have created,” she shared, adding that “Cry Pretty” is a “song I love so much.”
