14. She was in a children’s choir
Billie has always been a natural born musician and began writing music at the young age of 11. She shared with Vogue that she was a member of the Los Angeles Children’s Choir which helped develop her singing skills. “It’s [the choir] that helped me learn the proper way to sing and not ruin my voice completely. But I’ve just always sung, all the time. I sang so much that my family had to shush me,” she joked.

Billie’s brother wrote the song Ocean Eyes in 2015 and Billie decided to sing and record it so her dance teacher could choreograph a contemporary routine to it. The siblings ended up liking the song so much that they uploaded it to SoundCloud where it gained enough traction to be bought by a record label.

Billie’s brother, Finneas O’Connell, has collaborated with Billie on many of her tracks and is often the lyrical genius behind her hits. He’s worked in the music industry for even longer than Billie and writes her music alongside his own music for his band.

What makes Billie standout from other celebrities on the red carpet is definitely her unique streetwear-inspired style. She often wears baggy clothes and has admitted the reason is so that people can’t judge her body. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat a**,’ ‘she’s got a fat a**.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know,” she said.

Both Billie and her brother Finneas were homeschooled. Their parents ensured that their at-home curriculum had a heavy arts-focus, which makes sense given how musically gifted both their children turned out.

Back in 2018, a video surfaced online of Billie dealing with a variety of physical tics. Shortly after the videos were released, Billie addressed them and explained that she has dealt with Tourettes Syndrome for almost her entire life.

In 2016, Billie suffered from a major dance injury when she was dancing with seniors in her dance class. Her bone had separated from her hip muscle which caused her to be unable to dance for a few years.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, the first song Billie ever wrote was actually inspired by The Walking Dead. The song is called “Finger’s Crossed” and has lyrics that reference the series’ dialogue and episode titles.

Billie has been open about being in love with Justin Bieber since a young age, like many girls! “That was like my first love. That was the person I was in love with, in my head he was in love with me, it was like a relationship with a person,” Billie said about Justin in a radio interview with KROQ.

Billie has made it clear on multiple occasions that The Office is her favorite tv show of all time. She even used samples from the episode “Threat Level Midnight” in her song, “My Strange Addiction.”

Billie has opened up about her opinions on politics and women’s rights on many occasions. “Women should say, should do, and feel, and be exactly what they want. There should be nobody else telling them how to live their life, how to do shit. It just makes me so mad that if I start talking about it, I won’t stop. Men should not make women’s choices — that’s all I have to say,” she told Variety during the ASCAP Pop Music Awards.
