10 Celebrities Who Have Struggled With Acne
Published on June 12, 2014. Updated June 2, 2017It is easy to think that stars don’t have to struggle with their looks. When they show up at awards shows, they’re perfectly primped thanks to their makeup artists and hairstylists and when we see them in magazines they look flawless. But stars have the same struggles that we do. We have found 10 celebrities – who are incredibly beautiful – who have struggled with acne and have chosen to talk about it – check it out!
10. Cameron Diaz
According to Cameron Diaz, she struggled with acne for a number of years and it made her miserable. “I used to have horrible acne – deep, boiling pimples – the kind that hurt so badly, I didn’t want to leave my house. My friends said they didn’t notice, but I’d say, ‘It’s the only thing anyone can see!’ No amount of concealer and foundation could take away the texture of my skin, the embarrassment I felt, or the pain of those raging pimples. I was miserable,” Diaz told Seventeen magazine.

Jessica Simpson has been pretty open about her problems with cystic acne. Earlier in her career, she admitted to using Accutane to clear her skin. In 2004, the “With You” singer turned her back on Accutane and signed an endorsement deal with Proactiv. “I just had so much build up and so many clogged pores that once I started using Proactiv Solution, my face was just shining. I’m passionate about Proactiv because it worked for me and it gave me so much confidence,” the former reality TV star said.

According to the “Hannah Montana” star, she had bad acne as a teenager and she was bullied because of it, which lead her to become really depressed. “I went through a time where I was really depressed,” she told Elle magazine. “Like, I locked myself in my room and my dad had to break my door down. I had really bad skin and I felt really bullied because of that. But I never was depressed because of the way someone else made me feel. I just was depressed.”

In 2006, Kelly Clarkson – who has struggled with acne in the past – became a spokesperson for Proactiv. The “Stronger” singer credits Proactiv with improving her skin. “The biggest thing with this job is it’s so stressful and the thing with stress is that produces acne, especially for me. I just break out, like, all on my chin and I already have enough people judging everything I do, I don’t want them judging my skin. When I found proactive I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. This is amazing.’ I just remember seeing results right away,” Clarkson said.

Naya Rivera struggled with acne when she first joined the cast of “Glee.” The makeup artist on set gave her Proactiv products, which helped to improve her skin. “I used Proactiv and it really did work for me. It helped me out, so I got in contact with the company and told them I would love to share my story. So I showed them photos and they said, ‘This is great.’ Wait till people see my pictures. That’s all I have to say. I definitely have the photos to prove [I had a problem],” Riversa said.

Julianne Hough’s skin is incredibly clear these days; however, she didn’t always look this way. According to the “Footloose” star – who was also a spokesperson for Proactiv – she battled acne while she was first getting started in Hollywood. She discussed the experience, which she described as “horrible,” with People magazine. “You try to tell yourself that you’re fine and it’s all good – and you really should be fine – but it definitely affects you. You want to do what you can to make you feel good.”

When Salma Hayek was first starting out in Hollywood, she struggled with acne. Like many other celebrities, her skin problems made her depressed. “You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad, it sent me into a severe, severe depression. Like I couldn’t leave the house. I’d wake up in the morning and lie there and touch my face before I got up, just to prepare myself to look in the mirror!” Hayek told Lucky Magazine.

Katy Perry was under a lot of stress when she started her career and it ended up giving her acne. “I got acne at the start of my career. It was a stressful time,” the Grammy-nominated singer said. To hide the breakout, she used heavy makeup, which typically clogs pores and makes the condition even worse. “One [of my insecurities is] that I have acne scars. I’m self-conscious about that, so sometimes I wear too much makeup to cover them up,” Perry told Cosmopolitan.

When Kendra Wilkinson was living at the Playboy mansion and starring on “Girls Next Door,” she struggled with acne; however, once she became pregnant, her skin improved. “I have never felt this beautiful! The one thing I love about being pregnant is my skin, I used to have the worst acne. My whole life it’s been horrible – on the Girls Next Door, it was disgusting. This is the best skin that I have ever had in my life!” the reality TV star said.

Emma Stone is interested in skin care because she has sensitive skin and because she has struggled with acne in the past. “I’m actually pretty interested in skin care, because I had bad hormonal acne when I was 17, and they put me on Accutane for it. After two months on the Accutane, I went off of it, and since then, my skin, my mouth, my lips, my eyes are all so dry. Then, I had stress acne when I was 20, when I did Easy A, which they kindly video-airbrushed out of the movie,” Stone said.
