Lupita Nyong’o Gives Inpsiring Oscar Acceptance Speech!
Published on March 3, 2014. Updated October 15, 2014There were lots of talented women at last night’s Academy Awards — but Lupita Nyong’o was truly the belle of the ball.
Taking home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave, the 31 year-old was poised, emotional, eloquent and inspiring in her acceptance speech.
“Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition,” she began. “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own.”
She also thanked the film’s director, Steve McQueen, and her co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender. (She seemed to forget about the film’s writer, John Ridley.)
Lupita also mentioned the Yale School of Drama, where she studied to be an actress, and her friends and family, including her brother Junior, who attended the ceremony as her date and famously joined Ellen’s big celeb selfie, which “broke” Twitter for a while as it earned Retweets and favorites.
Lupita finished her speech with a flourish. “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid. Thank you.”
