The Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday that HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s new streaming service that will be launching in spring 2020, has ordered 10 episodes of a reboot of the CW series Gossip Girl, which aired from 2007 to 2012.
No one from the original cast will be returning. Instead, the show will take place eight years after the finale and follow a new generation of teenagers living in New York City. Social media will also play a huge role, specifically how much it has changed in the years between the show’s end and the launch of the reboot.
The original producers from the series — Joshua Safran, Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Leslie Morgenstein — have already signed on to the reboot.
Chace Crawford — who played Nate Archibald in the original series — said in an interview with ET this past February that, while no one has talked about bringing the show back, he was open to doing some sort of revival.
“I don’t think anyone’s been seriously talking about that. I think they’d have to come up with a real plan, and I know Josh and Stephanie would have to be a part of it,” he said. “It is funny to me, it’s almost become a classic now. It probably goes to show you that we shouldn’t be redoing it. I can’t be in high school anymore. That’s the thing. I don’t even know what they would do. For me personally, I would love to see everybody again and I loved everybody and I would love to work with everybody, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily a reality.”
In a different interview this past May, Leighton Meester didn’t seem completely opposed to reprising the role of Blair Waldorf at some point. “No one’s ever talked to me about it except for in interviews and I always say the same: I never say never, so I don’t know. No one’s sent me that information,” she told E! News.
