Grey’s Anatomy Rebounds After Karev’s Farewell Episode With A Major Breakup

Published on March 20, 2020.

Thursday, March 19 marked the first Grey’s Anatomy episode since the emotional farewell given to Justin Chambers’ Dr. Alex Karev.

In the episode, Karev wrote letters to Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey, and of course his wife Jo revealing that he left Seattle to go live with his former love Izzie Stevens after he discovered that Izzie had their twins using embryos they froze. Now, this week’s episode was all about moving on.

Right away, Jo was quick to correct Meredith Grey after she addressed her as “Karev.”

“Karev, you’re late,” Meredith Grey said during a phone call to Jo.

“It’s 5 a.m. and it’s not Karev anymore,” Jo responded.

“Fair enough, what is it?” asked Meredith.

“I don’t know yet,” she said.

“It’s Wilson now,” she told her coworkers after Meredith almost referred to her as Karev. “Wait, I don’t like that either. For now it is Dr. Jo,” she said, while putting a sticker over “Karev” on her lab coat.

Things continued to move quickly for Jo and her plan to move forward with her life without Karev when she ran into Dr. Schmitt at the bar who then revealed that he might have just broken up with his boyfriend, Dr. Nico Kim. “I think I dumped myself,” Schmitt told Jo. “Is that even possible? Oh, wait, of course it is. I’m me.” After lamenting that he had no place to go after leaving all his stuff at Nico’s, Jo offered to let him stay with her.

“Jo, that time in my mom’s basement was a one-time thing,” Schmitt said, referring to the time they hooked up during a previous break from Alex. “I’m a gay man.”

Bursting out laughing, Jo said, “That’s why you’re getting the invite.” “My place is too empty and I’m too sad and I don’t want to be chased out of the place that I bought myself because my husband, my ex-husband … I don’t want to have to go, but it needs to change, like now,” she added.

Of course, there is a whole lot more in store for Jo after Justin Chambers’ exit. The actress teased that big things are ahead for her character in an Instagram post, and then days later revealed she is expecting her second child which makes many wonder if a surprise pregnancy is going to be written into Jo’s storyline in the near future.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays (9 p.m. ET) on ABC.
